Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
