The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Return
One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Finding His True Position
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
