Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages down to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
